What it earns its space for
A food processor is the only countertop machine that cuts dry food into consistent pieces at volume: a pound of onions, a slicing disc through a bag of potatoes, a shredding disc through a block of cheese. With the standard blade it also handles doughs and pastes that no blender will touch, and the feed chute keeps the work moving without stopping to scrape.

What it does not replace
- A blender for liquids. Processor bowls seal against splash, not against liquid volume, and a full bowl of soup leaks.
- A knife for small quantities. Two shallots take less time by hand than the processor takes to wash.
- A mini chopper as a daily tool, because the full-size assembly is four parts and a chopper is two.
- A stand mixer for anything that needs sustained kneading or whipping.

How often you have to use it
One serious prep session a week is enough, and that is a lower bar than most appliances on this list. If the machine goes a month untouched, the counter inches are better spent.
This one stays out
It can go in a cabinet, and the parts pile is the reason it usually does not. A machine that has to be reassembled from three shelves before it can be used is a machine that stops being used.

No heat, but the lid and the feed chute need vertical room to open and to be loaded, and the chute is usually the tallest point. Manufacturers publish assembled height; measure to the upper cabinet before assuming the machine can be used where it fits.
